WHAT? DO YOU MEAN THAT THERE IS PLAGIARISM COMMITTED BY ACTIVERAIN MEMBERS?? I’M SHOCKED – – SHOCKED!

January 24, 2011

Warning…. if you can’t write your own content, if you can’t pay a paultry sum for clipart on the web… if you can’t get permission, it could cost you big time. Money AND respect.

Copy paste should be banned…. seriously….Think long and hard before stealing someone’s content. I am wondering how long this fool that actually had the nerve gall stupidity to copy Lenn’s material will keep the stolen content up?

In case the world of copyright has you baffled, here is something that should make perfect sense to you and your wallet….

IF IT AIN’T YOURS… DON’T USE IT!

FOUR ARTICLES COPIED AND POSTED ON ACTIVERAIN???   Jeff Belonger enters the sordid world of content thieves, copyright, plagiarism, pick your ethical conundrum.

HA!  IS THERE AN EPIDEMIC OF OF THE PLAGUE OF PLAGIARISM ON ACTIVERAIN?  Hopefully, it isn’t contagious.

THIS LITTLE IMAGE HAS MADE THE ROUNDS on web pages and blog posts and comments published by agents and ActiveRain members with a view about the ethics of plagiarism that differs from the vast majority of agents and ActiveRain members.

Auction

Jeff asks:  How angry do you get when you see someone post something that is 100% not theirs, yet there is no reference to another article.  What if they stole your content and made money off of it?

HA!  I’ll answer that question.  I get VERY ANGRY.  Sadly, it has happened more times than I wish to remember.

Just this morning, I was alerted in an e-mail from an ActiveRain friend about one of my images that had been “appropriated”, along with an entire page of content by a broker in New York.

Now take a look at my page.

http://www.homefinders.com/auction.html

This is a rather popular little graphic.  It was created about 3 years ago when Margaret Rome was with a broker that specialized in real estate auctions.  I created that page for real estate auction services with Margaret in mind.  Margaret’s no longer with that broker.  She is now the broker/owner of her own brokerage, HomeRome Realty, but the Homefinders.com web page is still gets traffic and generates about 3-4 calls a month. In fact, that little page generated a seller contact from a Baltimore City property owner inquiring about the auction option for their property, a former dentist office.  While the caller didn’t understand the auction process until I explained it to them, they were happy for me to refer them to Margaret to list their property for sale.  Listed, Sold and referral fee paid.  I love it when a plan comes together.

That little image was also “appropriated” by an ActiveRain member who was using it for a logo on her posts and comments.  Bob Stewart kindly deleted the article and comments that contained by copyright protected image when the ActiveRain member refused to do so.  Makes one wonder about the ethics of that real estate agent in her conduct in her real estate practice.

NOT TO WORRY JEFF.  This is not the last time you’ll see plagiarised posts on ActiveRain.  Send them to Karrie.  Due to the intricacies of running a business, it may appear that nothing is done about plagiarism on ActiveRain.  I disagree.  I believe that there is little than can be done by ActiveRain management except in cases where the abuse is clear and where the copy or images is registered content.

I believe that it’s up to each of us as individuals to police our own blogs and take action when abuse of copyright is found.  I have successfully proceeded against 4 ActiveRain members and collected damages when they have “appropriated” my copyright registered map images.  The damages were from $3,500 to $12,000, depending on how quickly the offender settles.

THESE POSTS ARE NO FUN.  SADLY, THEY ARE SIMPLY NECESSARY.
